In broad terms, a marketing mix is a concept referring to the development of a targeted marketing model for products and services. It incorporates a combination of the four critical elements of a product’s market at its core, also known as the four P’s, which are:

Marketing strategies are constantly evolving, and a wealth of information and resources are available to marketers and businesses. Marketing evolved as we entered the internet and digital age and is continually changing as work and commerce shift with the ongoing pandemic. Yet, regardless of its constant evolution and adaptation, marketing fundamentals remain constant. This concept makes the Marketing Mix an effective tool for marketers.

The four key elements (product, price, promotion, and place) allow marketers to develop a marketing campaign by breaking down and analyzing the product and the target customer. Understanding the target customer is an essential element of a marketing strategy. The Marketing Mix allows marketers to identify the customer’s needs and properly communicate solutions to those needs.

What Are The 4 Ps Of Marketing?

Product

The product is the item that is being marketed and sold. In this step, the product is broken down to develop a clear concept of its most important features, benefits, and how it compares to competitors. Here is where the target customer is analyzed as well. Again, it is essential to know the customer and their needs and identify how the product uniquely addresses that need.

How do you understand the product? Ask these questions:

  • Who is the customer, and what does he or she need?
  • How does the product address that need and/or benefit the customer?
  • What advantage does the customer gain by purchasing your product instead of a similar product from a competitor?

Price

Price is the next part of a marketing mix. Though it may seem like a non-issue, this part of your marketing mix can be deceptively challenging. Because when it's priced too high, a product is a much tougher sell for consumers, practically bringing your marketing campaign to a screaming halt.

Through market research, you can figure out pricing for your product or service by determining what your target audience is willing to pay for similar products from your competitors. It's equally important to make note of whether competing products have a unique value proposition, which can make higher prices more palatable in a competitive marketplace.

Another important aspect of this research is to quantify any indirect, incidental, or hidden costs associated with marketing and selling your product or service. These costs can include things like packaging, shipping, and even marketing costs.

Promotion

Promotion is the next step to a compelling marketing mix. Once the target audience is identified, you can break down how to promote and advertise the product.

Ask important questions such as:

  • What is the most effective way to deliver the product message?
  • What platform or service does the customer prefer?
  • Where will the client most likely see the product?

Place

This determines where your target audience will connect with the products. This step is essentially all about access. How will customers learn about and access the products? Where do your customers shop? How do you promote your products to your customers?

Creating Your Marketing Mix

The marketing mix can create a solid foundation for a marketing model when properly utilized. Each of the four P’s can effectively provide the insight needed. Once the foundation is in place, a well-rounded and effective marketing model and strategies can be developed.

With a solid foundation, a compelling marketing mix will grow and evolve as your customer or products do. Continued optimization is critical to maintaining a well-rounded marketing plan and pushing the success of a product and business. Each of the four P’s should be reviewed regularly to maintain that optimization.
